Thursday, June 18, 2009 from 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM (ET)
People around the world have observed spiritual and religious seasonal days of celebration during the month of June. Most have been religious holy days which are linked in some way to the summer solstice. On this day, typically June 21st, the daytime hours are at a maximum in the Northern hemisphere, and night time is at a minimum. It is officially the first day of summer. It is also referred to as Midsummer because it is roughly the middle of the growing season throughout much of Europe.
"Solstice" is derived from two Latin words: "sol" meaning sun, and "sistere," to cause to stand still. This is because, as the summer solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the solstice, it rises an imperceptible amount, compared to the day before. In this sense, it "stands still."
The Australian Wine Society will not be standing still, but will be celebrating our “Midsummer’s Day” at the Boulevard Club on Toronto’s waterfront. As always, we meet at 6:30 outside on the deck overlooking Lake Ontario, for bubbly and munchies, then inside in the Solarium and Lakeshore Rooms for a full four course dinner with wines. AWS Cellar Master, John Macdonald has selected wines to go with each course and maybe, something special with dessert, to top off the evening. Last year we sold out the 80 seats, very quickly, so book early. Members $95.00 Guests $110.00
In addition to all the fine wines with dinner, we will be offering a Magnum of Eileen Hardy 1996 Shiraz as a draw prize. Tickets are 5 for $10.00.

Via MichelinThe Australian Wine Society (AWS) of Toronto is a not-for-profit organization devoted to the enjoyment of the wines of Australia. Through exposure to, and education about the wines and wine regions of Australia, the Society seeks to encourage, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, a greater awareness of the wine varietals, the diversity and the styles of Aussie wines. The opportunity to try a wide range of wines makes it easier for members to decide what types they might want to purchase through wine agents, the LCBO, Vintages monthly releases and the Classics Catalogue.
